Disclaimer: I am still a Self Learning Japanese student, this post I'm going to share how I learned to change from -masu form (ーます)to dictionary form (辞書) , of course I won't be 100% correct nor 100% wrong, if you think I had gave wrong explanation, please correct me.
It is important to know dictionary form because when you need to search for a word in the dictionary, it do not have -masu in it. eg: 書きます (kakimasu) won't be in the dictionary, instead you need to change to 書く。Try it now in your dictionary .
Because Minna no Nihongo don't really explain it, I having HARD time learning it until I discover a site that taught me how to do it, so this is the LINK, but I'm going to summarize it. Below~ Hope you like it and learned something from the site and my summary :)
Japanese Verbs are divided into 3 groups (and the reason why they are divided into 3 groups I have no idea, if you know the reason please tell me :) 教えてください
Verbs Group I
All the "i" ending sounds will change to "u"
P.s: when I said "i" means the spelling in romaji "i" and not い。
when I said "u" means the spelling in romaji "u" and not う。
i - u
ki - ku
shi - su
chi - tsu (yup special case)
ni - nu
hi - fu (another special case~)
mi - mu
ri - ru
gi - gu
bi - bu
pi - pu
例:
かきます ー かく (kaki-masu) take away the "i" and it became Kaku
のります ー のる (nori-masu) take away the "i" and it became Noru
さきます ー さく (saki-masu) take away the "i" and it became Saku
くもりますー くもる(kumori-masu) take away the "i" and it became kumoru
Verb Group 2
This is very easy remove the ( -masu /ーます) and add in (-ru/ーる)
例:
生まれます ー生まれる (umare-masu) take away the -masu and add in Ru it became umareru
かんばえますーかんばえる(kanbae-masu) take away the -masu and add in Ru it became kanbaeru
Verb Group 3
This group is a special case group where they have their own form. (you can see it at the link I gave) or here
します(shimasu)ー する(suru)
きます(kimasu) ー くる(kuru)
終わり。
